Neskowin vs. Manzanita: Which Oregon Coast Town Should You Book?

I photographed a stay in each of these towns and somehow never posted either one. Both are small, both are cozy, and both are the kind of beach town that doesn't feel like a beach town. But they are not the same trip, and picking the wrong one can mean a weekend that doesn't match the mood you were after. Here's how to choose.

The quick answer

If you want a tiny, quiet village where the biggest decision of the day is which direction to walk on the beach, book Neskowin. If you want a little more to do, a town you can wander, and a mountain to hike, book Manzanita.

Neskowin: the sleepy one

Neskowin sits about two hours west of Portland, and it's about as small as an Oregon coast town gets. There's a general store, a couple of restaurants, a farmers market, and a golf course that's been there since 1932. That's the whole village, and that's exactly the point.

The star of the show is Proposal Rock, the sea stack that sits right off the beach. At low tide you can walk out to it and poke around the tide pools. If you visit in winter, low tides can also reveal the ghost forest, the stumps of a spruce forest that's around 2,000 years old. Check a tide table before you go, because the tide decides how much of this you get to see.

Where I stayed: The Weekender was such a vibe.

Book Neskowin if you want a slow weekend, a writing retreat, a quiet couples trip, or an off-season escape where you're not competing with anyone for a spot on the sand.

Skip it if you want a lot of shopping, nightlife, or a long list of restaurants to try.

Manzanita: the one with options

Manzanita is tucked between the Pacific, Nehalem Bay, and Neahkahnie Mountain, just south of Cannon Beach. The beach is wide and long, and it's easy to get lost walking it for an hour. The town itself is small but walkable, with enough little shops and places to eat that you can spend a day without ever getting in the car.

There's more to do here too. The Neahkahnie Mountain hike is about three miles round trip and ends with a view of the bay and the ocean from the summit. Nehalem Bay State Park is nearby for trails and wildlife, you can book a horseback ride on the beach, and Nehalem Bay Winery is a short drive away. If you come around December or March, you might even spot gray whales passing through.

Book Manzanita if you're traveling with friends or family, you like having a town to wander, or you want a hike and a beach day in the same trip.

Skip it if your idea of a perfect weekend is total silence and not seeing another human.

How they compare

Neskowin feels like a secret. It's quieter, smaller, and more about the beach and the landmarks right outside your door. Manzanita feels like a classic Oregon coast town with a little more going on, a bigger beach, and a mountain at the end of the road. Neither one is better. They're just built for different moods.

So which one should you book?

Pick Neskowin when you need to unplug and the plan is to do almost nothing. Pick Manzanita when you want a mix of beach time, a good hike, and a place to grab a coffee and wander. And if you can't decide, they're both on the north Oregon coast, so you can always make it a road trip and do one right after the other.

A photographer's tip

Wherever you land, give yourself time at the beach at the edges of the day. The light on this stretch of coast does the heavy lifting, and a short walk with your phone at sunrise or sunset will get you better pictures than you expect.
