A Perfect Summer Day in Rockaway Beach & Why You Should Bring Your Whole Family

Some beach days are just good. The kind where the sun actually shows up, the waves are cooperative, and nobody's ready to leave when it's time to go. That's exactly the kind of day I had the pleasure of photographing in Rockaway Beach, Oregon this past summer and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

I was there to photograph an extended family reunion, and what unfolded over those hours was exactly why I love this stretch of the Oregon coast. Footballs spiraling through salt air. Kids sprinting down the waterline, completely convinced this race was the one that mattered. Waves crashing, laughter louder. The whole gorgeous chaos of a family actually being together.

Rockaway Beach doesn't get nearly enough credit. It's quieter than Cannon Beach, less crowded than Seaside, and honestly? The light on a clear summer day there is something else entirely.

The Beach Itself

Rockaway Beach is a long, wide, flat stretch of Oregon coast which makes it ideal for exactly the kind of family chaos I witnessed. There's room to throw a football without worrying about hitting a stranger. Room for the older kids to have a legitimate sprint race (and argue about who won). Room for the little ones to work up the courage to chase a wave and then absolutely scream when it chases them back.

It's the kind of beach that doesn't ask anything of you. You just show up, kick off your shoes, and let it do its thing.

If you're planning a visit, give yourself at least a full morning or afternoon. Bring layers, even on sunny days, the coast has opinions and let the kids lead. Some of the best moments I've ever photographed have happened when nobody was paying attention to the camera.

Where to Eat: El Trio Loco III & Tie Breaker

After a morning on the sand, you're going to be hungry. Rockaway Beach has you covered.

El Trio Loco III is the kind of place you'd walk past and then immediately turn around for. Bright, casual, and serving up Mexican food that hits differently when you've been breathing in ocean air all morning. It's a locals' favorite for a reason. The portions are generous, the flavors are the real deal, and the vibe is exactly right for a sandy, sun-kissed crew rolling in after the beach.

Tie Breaker is another great option if you're looking for something more laid-back and diner-style, the kind of place where the kids can be loud and nobody minds, the coffee is hot, and the food is exactly what you want after a long beach morning. Comfort food, good energy, no fuss.

Honestly? You could do both if you time it right. Early lunch at one, late snack at the other. No judgment here.

Where to Stay: Starfish Vacation Rentals

If you're making a weekend of it, and you should, Starfish Vacation Rentals is worth a look for your accommodations. Vacation rentals on the Oregon coast have this particular magic to them: you wake up, make coffee, and you're already there. No lobby, no checkout lines, no tiny continental breakfast. Just the sound of the ocean and the whole day ahead of you.

For an extended family trip especially, having a house rather than a hotel changes everything. You can actually be together. Cook dinner, stay up late on the porch, let the kids run between rooms. The coast is better when you're not rushing back to check out by 11.

A Note on Family Photos at the Beach

I'll be honest: I used to think "family beach photos" meant stiff poses in matching white linen. And sometimes that's exactly what people want, and that's beautiful.

But what I love about shooting on a beach like Rockaway is that the environment does the work. When you give a family room to just be. To play, to race, to tackle each other in the waves, the photos that come out of that feel like actual memories. Not a portrait sitting. A day you lived.

If you're planning a trip to the Oregon coast this summer and want to bring home something more than iPhone screenshots, I'd love to be there for it. I'm based just up the coast in Raymond, WA, and I know this stretch of shoreline well.
